Before booking a hire car for your ski holiday, sort out where you will drive and what the car includes. Confirm border permission, winter equipment and route checks together. This checklist covers ordinary passenger-car trips in the French and Italian Alps; check the current local road orders and your rental agreement for the journey you are planning.

1. Get permission for the countries you will enter

Write down the pickup country, destination and every border on the planned route. A car collected in Italy and driven to a French ski base needs a rental agreement that allows that journey. If an alternative route passes through another country, include it in the question before paying.

Policies depend on the rental and vehicle category. Europcar, for example, says cross-border use generally requires prior written consent and a specific package. Ask your supplier to confirm permitted countries, any extra charge, breakdown assistance abroad and whether your chosen vehicle category is eligible. Keep the reply with the booking; a general list of countries on a website is less useful than confirmation for your reservation.

2. Match the equipment to the entire route

For a passenger car in France's designated mountain zones, plan for the annual 1 November–31 March equipment period. The Hautes-Alpes department says its whole road network is covered. The usual choice is four qualifying winter tyres or suitable removable equipment for at least two driven wheels. The tyre definition combines the Alpine mountain-and-snowflake symbol, often called 3PMSF, with an M+S variant; M+S alone does not meet that winter-tyre definition.

Treat the Italian part separately. SITAF explains that equipment obligations on its network are set by road ordinances updated each year and indicated by signs. Check the current order for the roads and dates you will use, including the A32 if it forms part of your journey. Do not assume France's dates are the Italian rule or that meeting a seasonal minimum permits you through every temporary restriction.

3. Ask what the pickup branch will actually supply

A reservation described as a winter rental does not tell you whether it includes winter tyres, chains or both. Europcar France says available winter equipment varies by branch and availability. SIXT Italy distinguishes chains supplied during the relevant period at affected branches from winter tyres, which it lists as a paid option subject to availability.

Ask for four tyres carrying the required markings, plus the exact removable equipment supplied or available for the vehicle. If you want chains as well as winter tyres, say so explicitly. Confirm any charge and whether the option is guaranteed. A larger vehicle or four-wheel drive is not confirmation of its tyres or chain equipment. Check the actual vehicle and equipment at collection before accepting it.

4. Make sure the chains fit—and you can use them

Ask the branch or vehicle manufacturer which driven wheels need the equipment and which devices are compatible with the wheel size and clearance. Have the branch show you where the kit is and how it is fitted. Keep the instructions accessible with the equipment, rather than buried under the week's luggage.

The French Interior Ministry advises practising installation before departure. Check the battery, wipers, lighting and winter screenwash too. If this is your own car, make those checks before loading it; with a rental, raise missing or unclear equipment at pickup. Follow the vehicle and device instructions rather than guessing on a cold roadside.

5. Check road conditions again before the mountain leg

Save the official road-information pages before leaving. For Hautes-Alpes roads, the department directs travellers to Inforoute Hautes-Alpes. If your route uses the A32 or Fréjus tunnel, SITAF's information page links to traffic updates, works and closure notices for the A32 and T4. Check the relevant network, rather than relying on a general resort weather report.

Follow local signs, restrictions and instructions even if a navigation app still offers the road. The Hautes-Alpes advice is to postpone travel when roads are impracticable, avoid fitting chains in the middle of the road and leave room for winter-maintenance vehicles. Build an arrival plan that can change, with your host's contact details and an agreed way to update key collection.

6. Compare the complete arrangement with a transfer

Before choosing, put the hire charge, cross-border package, winter equipment, fuel or charging, tolls and parking into one total. Check how many bags and ski bags will fit with every passenger seated. Confirm parking with the accommodation, and consider whether you want to drive again during the week.

Then compare a dated transfer quote for the same group, arrival point, accommodation address and return journey. The useful decision is whether the complete arrangement works for you, including winter driving and collection time. Neither a cheap daily hire rate nor a short advertised drive time answers that alone.

Send one clear request before booking

Give the supplier your pickup branch and dates, destination, planned countries, number of passengers and luggage. Ask it to confirm crossing permission and charges, the actual winter equipment, compatibility of the chains and assistance abroad. That creates a useful written check you can bring to the desk.

If you would like help comparing the journey with the rest of the holiday, tell Go Alpes about your trip. Snow.Holiday is connected with Go Alpes and Snow Cab; these are related businesses. An enquiry is not a confirmed reservation.

Chi siamo Hiring a car for the French and Italian Alps: six winter checks

Does a hire car automatically include winter tyres?

Do not assume so. Europcar France says provision varies by branch and availability, while SIXT Italy distinguishes supplied chains from winter tyres offered separately. Ask the actual pickup branch to confirm the equipment for your reservation.

Can I drive an Italian rental car into France?

Only when your rental agreement allows the journey for the chosen vehicle. Confirm permitted countries, written authorisation, charges and assistance with the supplier before booking. Cross-border policies depend on pickup country, vehicle category and destination.

Where should I check the roads before driving to the Alps?

For Hautes-Alpes roads, use the department's Inforoute service. For an A32 or Fréjus route, check SITAF's official traffic and closure information. Recheck the networks used by your actual journey and follow local restrictions.
